How to Take Care of Your Hair Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner! The festivities are fun but it can take a toll on your skin and hair so now is time to think about you how to prep and care for both.  Last year we gave you skincare tips which you can read by clicking here.   It is important to not only care for your skin after the costume comes off but also for your hair.

Your Halloween hairstyle may include hair paint, hair sprays, adhesives, glitter and lots of teasing.  Don’t let the thought of what all this can do to your hair stop you from creating a fun hairstyle.  By taking a few simple steps you can restore your hair to its natural healthy state.

Prep Your Hair

The night before Halloween prep your hair with a deep conditioner.  Conditioning will help add moisture to your hair making it more flexible and resilient.  Use your favorite hair conditioner or choose a natural conditioner such as 100% Coconut Oil.  Should you choose a natural conditioner such as Coconut Oil, apply it at bedtime the night before Halloween.  Massage a generous amount into your hair so that it looks wet.  Leave the Coconut Oil in overnight and wash it out in the morning.  Your hair will be smooth, shiny, moisturized and ready for the night to come.

Before styling your hair avoid applying too much heat.  High heat dries your hair making it brittle and prone to breakage.  If you must use a hot iron or apply heat from the hair blower use a hair serum or conditioner to add moisture back to your hair.

Hairstyling Tips

Avoid teasing your hair.  Teasing may give you the look you want and it is pretty easy to do, however it causes lots of damage to your hair. If you must tease, be gentle. Brush down and then brush up slowly. Repeat as many times as necessary.  Once you have the desired look, spray your hair with a finishing spray or hair spray to hold it in place.

Wear a wig.  If you don’t want to tease your hair or add color and sprays you can opt for a wig.  Wigs will give you the same fun look without the mess.  Make sure to wear a wig cap. Wig caps help keep your hair smooth and tight against your head, prevent breakage and knotting and allows your wig to fit better.

End of Night Hair Care

Detangling your hair at the end of the night may be a challenge.  Wash your hair with warm water and shampoo.  Use a soft bristle brush to get out any goo that is in your hair.   Follow up with a gentle conditioner that you massage into your hair from the tips up to the roots. Brush the conditioner through your hair with a large tooth comb.  This will help rid your hair of any remaining knots.  After washing and conditioning with warm water, rinse your hair with cool water.  The colder water will help close the hair follicles and restore shine back to your hair.

Do not go to sleep in your Halloween hairstyle.  You hair may already be knotted from all the product and styling.  If you sleep on it, it will only get worse.  Take a few minutes before bed to take all the hair accessories out, brush the tangles away and rinse out any product you applied.  If you are too tired to fully wash and condition your hair make sure to do so first thing in the morning.

Halloween is a time for fun.  The best costumes are those that pay attention to detail and one of the important details is your hair.  By following the few simple steps above you will be able to keep your hair healthy while enjoying a crazy hairdo.
