October 31st consists of a lot of cute costumes, and a lot of crazy makeup. But have you ever thought about how that makeup affects your skin?
The costume makeup and paint that you apply to your skin for Halloween isn’t typically the type of makeup you use on a daily basis so it’s understandable that it might affect your skin differently. There are ways you can help decrease the risk of breakouts and help keep your makeup lasting longer than usual!
For some of us, battling breakouts can be a challenge. Personally, I have sensitive skin and any little change can cause a breakout for me so I take all the precautions I can when it comes to applying something different to my skin. I have a rigorous beauty routine and don’t like to stray away from it but of course there are always special occasions, such as Halloween, that call for a different routine. Whether you have sensitive skin or not, taking care of your skin is very important. I’m going to let you in on some tips I have for taking care of my skin during special occasions like Halloween.
Prepping for Halloween Makeup
Hydration is always a good practice to help with clear skin but is especially important during holidays or special occasions when you may be too busy to realize you aren't drinking the amount of water you should be to stay hydrated. Halloween, for instance, is a perfect example. Whether you are trick-or-treating with your kids, or going to a crazy party downtown with a bunch of your girl friends, it’s important to stay hydrated. Proper hydration can help reduce breakouts and will help keep skin moisturized and nourished, therefore helping makeup go on smoother and stay on longer. For the week before a special occasion, I try to drink a lot of water to help keep my skin moisturized!
Another proactive measure you can take before applying Halloween makeup is when you are shopping, look at the ingredients of the costume makeup you are thinking about buying and see if there are any ingredients that you already know of that will cause a bad reaction to your skin. In some cases, it may just be better to use actual makeup (especially the brands you already use) for your Halloween makeup rather than the paint-like kind that you find at Halloween stores. If you need to use Halloween makeup for your costume, that is completely understandable and many people do it but I would suggest testing your costume makeup on a small patch of your skin before applying it to your whole face for a night. A simple swatch on your hand or arm will let you know if your skin has any negative reaction to the makeup ingredients. If your skin is perfectly fine after a while, it’s probably alright to use on your face for a night. However, if that little swatch of makeup causes a rash or some sort of skin irritation, you may want to try another type. No one likes unwanted breakouts!
Getting Ready with Halloween Makeup
As I previously mentioned, moisturizing your skin is one of the key components in prepping your skin for costume makeup. By moisturizing your face before applying your makeup, it will help your makeup last longer and keep it from cracking on your skin. You have probably seen the “makeup cracking” that I’m talking about; this can happen when you apply too much makeup, or if your skin is not moisturized appropriately. A 100% natural oil is an ideal way to naturally moisturize your skin.
This same idea can be practiced when applying lip color. Whether for Halloween or for an everyday look, making sure your lips are properly moisturized will make all the difference! By using lip balm on your lips before applying lip color, it will help the color last longer! The lip balm will also keep your lips moisturized and will provide a protective layer. Once you remove your lip color at the end of the night, reapply lip balm to help condition and moisturize your lips. Applying lip balm before you go to bed and letting your lips soak in the hydration all night is even better! Properly moisturized lips are healthier and will not crack or become chapped.

Taking care of your hair is another important component in getting ready for Halloween. Sometimes your hair can get just as must damage as your skin during special occasions. Some Halloween costumes call for poofy, teased hair and others require straightened, sleek hair. Either way, most costumes involve a special hairdo that may damage your hair. To protect your hair from the colorants, heating tools, and hair accessories used to get the look you want, condition it prior to dressing up and as soon as you wash your hair afterwards. Natural moisturizers such as Coconut Oil or Argan Oil will provide the nutrients needed to keep your hair healthy. If possible, it would be better to not sleep with colorants and hair accessories in your hair, but that isn’t always feasible.
Cleaning Your Skin After Halloween Events
Taking care of your skin and hair after your Halloween festivities is just as important as it is while prepping and getting ready beforehand. One of most important steps to do at the end of the night is removing your makeup as soon as you can, or at least before you go to bed; this is especially important for oily or acne prone skin. Sleeping in makeup just one night won’t cause long-term damage, but it can cause your pores to clog, resulting more breakouts. A face cleanser like our Vitamin E Antioxidant Facial Cream Wash is a great way to remove Halloween makeup and will help hydrate and condition your skin. You can also add the Tea Tree Toner to this cleansing step as well to purify and nourish your skin!
Giving your skin the extra attention it needs before and after your night of Halloween festivities can be very beneficial. I hope these tips will come in handy for you!
